Sex, songs and other signs of Spring

We've enjoyed a few days of warmer weather the past week.  The NCC has closed the canal, perhaps for the season, and patches of damp, brown earth have begun to emerge in warmer corners of yards and gardens.  Sue tells me that the squirrels have become quite randy and prone to performing lude acts in our back yard, and I heard two chickadees singing out "hey cutie" along the canal several days ago.  From my 4th floor window in City Hall, I've seen a half dozen ravens soaring, twirling and tumbling in courtship displays over Confederation Park and the surrounding towers.

I walked to City Hall today, and on my way I looked for something to prove that winter is giving way to spring -- apart from the longer days.  The canal was quiet and rutted, but still locked in ice.  And skaters filled the Rink of Dreams at City Hall.  But along the pathway, in the bright sunlight, I found a hint of green and a hint of warmer days to come.
